CONCORD, N.C. – A Cabarrus County teacher has been arrested and charged with multiple child sex offenses, according to the sheriff’s office.

The suspect has been identified as 39-year-old John Amerigo Calabrese, a social studies teacher at Northwest Cabarrus High School.

Cabarrus County Schools confirmed Calabrese was immediately suspended after his arrest. The district stated it is fully cooperating with law enforcement and has notified parents and staff of the allegations.

Court documents allege that Calabrese “unlawfully, willfully, and feloniously engaged in sex” with a 10-year-old child. He is now facing charges of indecent liberties with a child and statutory sex offense with a child by an adult.

The investigation began after the sheriff’s office received a referral from the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

A magistrate initially set his bond at $1 million before it was revoked. At a Friday morning court appearance, the bond was reset at $1.75 million.
